Cougar Romance

May-December Romance: the romantic involvement of two parties between whom there is a considerable age difference… The reasoning behind this designation is that while one person is young and in the “Spring” of his or her life (thus, “May”), the other is in “Winter” (ergo, “December”). — Urban Dictionary

A young ingénue falling for an older, more sophisticated (and therefore, in theory, more experienced) gentleman has been a romance staple for ages. More recently, the cougar heroine has taken the romance scene by storm. Younger heroes are finding the mature charms of MILF characters impossible to resist… not that the women are resisting all that much. (wink)

But how young is too young? A May-December romance typically discounts any age gap less than a decade. The famous half-your-age-plus-seven rule dictates the lower limit of a socially acceptable younger partner. Yet even when both requirements are met, such relationships, especially between an older woman and younger man, turn heads and invite gossip, even judgment.
