I’m pleased to report October’s fundraising campaign for one n ten was a rousing success! Thanks to those of you who purchased Nine Dates last month, $135.00 in royalties was raised. I posted the donation online at one n ten’s website and received a lovely thank you letter from the folks there, posted in part here:
Thank you for your recent gift of $135.00 to one n ten. We truly appreciate your support…
We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that the next generation of LGBTQ leaders enjoys all the opportunities they deserve…
We enhance their lives by providing empowering social and service programs that promote self-expression, self-acceptance, leadership development and healthy life choices…

“The 2009 [National School Climate] survey of 7,261 middle and high school students found that… nearly 9 out of 10 LGBT students experienced harassment at school in the past year and nearly two-thirds felt unsafe because of their sexual orientation. Nearly a third of LGBT students skipped at least one day of school in the past month because of safety concerns.” —Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network
I am continually humbled by stories of courage and perseverance by LGBT individuals of every race, gender, and age, and I’m outraged that any kind of discrimination or harassment persists against them.
In honor of National Coming Out Day on October 11, 2012, I’m donating 100% of all royalties earned from sales of “Nine Dates” during the entire month of October to one n ten. That includes every format—electronic and paper—from every vendor!
one n ten is a fabulous organization based in Phoenix, AZ serving LGBTQ youth, focusing their efforts on education, awareness, and suicide prevention. They’ve received accolades including a Swagger Award for the innovative Q High, the first LGBTQ high school program in the state, enabling the youth they serve (one-third of which are dropouts, half of whom are homeless) to earn a diploma online in a safe, encouraging environment. They also implement the Sources of Strength suicide prevention program.
I strongly encourage you to check out one n ten and consider joining me in making a personal donation. A mere $25 enables a youth to attend the Sources of Strength Peer Leader training. When you consider how many precious lives are at stake, this is truly an incredible value!
